SCI-FI AND AMERICAN STUDIES

Today’s guest is Rune, an associate professor from the Center for American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark. In this episode of Humans of SDU, we’ll get to know Rune through his two favorite passions: sci-fi and games. So, tune in to listen to Rune touch upon the following aspects:

  • Why do we enjoy watching horror movies?
  • In what way does sci-fi address our societal problems?
  • How is it to be on a paternity leave?

How did we find Rune?

Rune was actually Miška’s professor in the course called “Dark America” before she graduated from American Studies. She enjoyed his classes a lot, as he taught a class that concerned topics such as horror, alcohol, and drugs. Anyone that can get Miška to watch this genre is very special!

Rune was also recommended to us by Line – another guest on this podcast who was in his “Broken Dreams” class.

Portrait of Rune

““There is this fascination about the darkness – horror, detective fiction, it’s all about murder, and that is what fascinates us as human beings. Part of it also goes back to the ancient Greek idea of catharsis – you read these things, you watch horrors, and you are pleased: It’s not me being knifed down by a lunatic killer or taken down by a pandemic.”

RUNE

As mentioned, Rune is an associate professor at the Center of American Studies and his fascination with sci-fi is absolutely intriguing. He describes the Covid-19 pandemic as zombie-esque, which really is a good way to describe this pandemic! Moreover, he also talks about how dark life can get and how to deal with things getting a bit bleak – in terms of horror and sci-fi. Rune talks about how he finds optimism in this very bleak genre and how hard it can be to binge-watch some of these shows such as Black Mirror!

On top of that, he also touches upon how hard it can be for the human species to adapt to change. Apart from being a professor, he is also a father of two – tune in to listen to how paternity leave works in Denmark and how different it is from country to country! So, what are you waiting for? Tune in with your hosts Miška and Martin!
